The art of building a hot rod is alive and thriving for now. I wonder though if this art will survive a generation that is dying off.
If you've ever been to any National Street Rod Association shows, you will have noticed the participants are almost all of the baby boomer generation. Proud people, mostly men, who have artfully constructed and restored cars and trucks of yesteryear, but not so much for historical purposes. At any of these events you'll hear old rodders boast about their specialty motors and other features that make each car unique. From custom paint to wheels to engines and accessories, each old beauty tells her own story.
Pulled from barns and garages from all over the U.S., these old cars are given a second chance by their faithful owners. Restoration can be a lifelong endeavor, but you'll see those folks who are fortunate enough to have completed their vision, polishing and buffing their sweet rides before the event opens.
So back to the question, can this art survive beyond the baby boomer generation?
